Pros and Cons of Playing Video Games (Gaming Hunters Post 3)
PROS OF PLAYING VIDEO GAMES
1. Improves Coordination
Most of the games require players to watch the screen without even looking at the controller because they have to execute the required command in the game without even taking less than a second. This requires high-level hand-eye coordination. This requires a fluent movement of both hands and eyes. The player should know when to press the next key. Hand-eye coordination is required in both hence gaming improves coordination.
Playing your favorite video game may require both visual and audial memory. The player is required to read or listen to the instructions which might only be provided at the beginning of the game, thus the need to remember them throughout the entire game.
3. Training and Improvement of Physical and Mental Abilities
It has been proven in some studies that if we play video games daily, we can improve our visual attention, be more efficient in changing tasks, be faster in tasks where we have to perform a visual search or discriminate objects by their shape/color.
4. Encourage Teamwork
In team games, players will also develop group work skills as they sometimes have to be united to overcome some challenges.
In addition, it also allows them to develop other abilities such as quick thinking to act satisfactorily in the face of problems presented to them or even work under pressure to avoid losing the game.
5. Improves Fine Motor Skills
The interaction in video games improves fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination of preschool children, according to a study by Deakin University in Melbourne.
CONS OF PLAYING VIDEO GAMES
1. Aggressiveness
Children are increasingly exposed to growing physical and sexual violence present in all media. The violent content of these media may cause childhood aggression (Anderson 2007).
2. Behavioral and Mental Changes
Players who spend hours on gaming without any rest may become violent, introvert; lose interest in the environment and their surroundings, this may happen with every single person who plays video games at some point. A person may become violent if others will tell him to stop video games and to have a daily routine like dinner or even family gatherings.
3. Negative Effects on Socialization
The child who has fun with games that are violent can lead to negative effects in their socialization with other equals, leading to their lack of sense of belonging or social justice (Reyes-Hernández, 2006 in Reyes-Hernández, 2014).
4. Affect the Life of the Players
If you do not have control of its use, it can affect our lives in a negative way; thus affecting our school performance, the family and our day to day life in general.
5. Sleep Deprivation
Exceeding exposure to entertainment screens produces sleep problems. Day and night overexposure generates (very vivid) hypnagogic images that usually produce nightmares.
In Gamingwolfs conclusion , playing video games has several important drawbacks. They are decreased physical condition, play compulsively, isolating, and feckless. Parents should be more careful with the time their children are exposed to electronic games, and adults should try to maintain an active social life.
Video games are a form of media that is often associated with negative health consequences. However, when games are played in moderation and with mindfulness, they are a viable source of stress relief as well as a catalyst for mental health improvement and development of social skills.
