Video Game Effect On Society (Gaming Hunters Post 16)

INTRODUCTION

According to many studies, video games can increase aggressive behavior, cause emotional outbursts and decrease inhibitions in many people (Kardaras 2008). As a result of the increased exposure to this modern phenomenon, a mounting body of research is linking video games to violent, aggressive and anti-social behavior. For this reason, the study focuses on “investigating the impact of video gaming on society to determine whether it leads to aggressive, violent, anti-social behavior”.

Video games are certainly nothing new, every kid alive today has grown up with video games, and as a society, we are just on the cusp of how much this technology can impact our everyday lives.

How do Video Games have an Impact on Society in Gamingwolfs?

Adolescents and children are groups of people who are mostly engrossed in video games in society. The vulnerability of these groups especially children is prominent, as they are at such crucial stages in their development that they are highly influenced by their environment. For this reason, some concerns have arisen as to why “video games have become very influential story-tellers for this generation of children and youth”.

The negative effects of violent video games are evident in a recent study that involved adolescents playing two different games for 30 minutes. The researchers divided a group of 44 adolescents into two groups and randomly assigned the children to play one of the two games; the first being the high-octane “Need for Speed: Underground”, and the other the ultra-violent first-person shooter “Medal of Honor: Frontline”.

The Benefit to Society in Gamingwolfs

One of the many topics that came up during Qutee’s research was the benefit that gaming can have on society as a whole. In an online poll, gamers were asked what they believed to be the main benefit of gaming. Over 40% said that gaming improves emotional well-being. That’s a serious benefit if you consider that one in five people in America experiences mental health issues each year.

Another benefit that is talked in Gamingwolfs is about forming strong friendships. Around two-thirds of gamers claim that they have met up to five friends while playing games and another 37% say they have made even more.

The Future
Overall, video games and the world of gaming is going to continue to evolve. Many companies have virtual reality gaming systems that will be introduced to the public next year. Given everything that gaming has already done for us as a whole, the embracing of gaming and the technology associated with it, have the opportunity to make the world, smarter, safer, and friendlier.
