What Video Games Can Teach Us ? (Gaming Hunters Post 4)
Video games help children to develop problem-solving skills and enhanced thinking. Every game contains some elements of ‘real-life’, and video games can help teach you how to accept and deal with them effectively.
Strategic Planning, Forward Thinking
Many games involve strategizing, planning and expecting what your enemy will do next. You don’t have to play an RTS game to reap the benefit of this – both playing against an A.I. and other people will teach you how to effectively plan ahead. The lesson is clear: You plan ahead and have a chance, or you wing it and probably lose.
Screen Reading
Gamingwolfs tells that video games can enhance reading skills, too. In the game Animal Crossing, for instance, players become characters who live in a town full of animals. Over the course of the game, you can buy a house, travel from town to town, go to museums, and do other ordinary things. All the while, you're writing notes to other players and talking to the animals. Because kids are interested in the game, they often end up reading at a level well above their grade, even if they say they don't like to read.
Creativity
Playing games encourages creative and quick thinking – a study in California has actually shown that playing video games helps older people improve and maintain their cognitive function.
Socializing With Others
In a game you even have a small advantage to dealing with people in person: If you mess up, you usually get a do-over and see how characters react to certain decisions. For people who are a little socially awkward, this can actually help them prepare for the outside world by giving them a chance to see how a conversation may affect others.
Improved Skills
Gamingwolfs tells that video games also help in improving visual skills. That was what researchers from the University of Rochester in New York recently found.
In the study, frequent game players between the ages of 18 and 23 were better at monitoring what was happening around them than those who didn't play as often or didn't play at all.
They could keep track of more objects at a time. And they were faster at picking out objects from a cluttered environment.
